Yakov Smirnoff, the famous Soviet-born comedian known for his "In Soviet Russia..." jokes, truly did emigrate from the USSR (then Ukraine) seeking the American dream, arriving in the 1970s as a Jewish émigré, using his unique perspective to become a beloved cultural icon in the U.S. by highlighting differences between Soviet and American life, even famously saying

 

"In America, you can always count on someone;

in Russia, we can always count on someone to count on you!"

Yakov has been a regular on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and, just recently, with Jimmy Fallon. He burst onto the big screen in "Moscow on the Hudson" and continued to appear in films, TV's Night Court and his own TV Special. Next, he starred on Broadway in his smash hit one-man show.
