Guild director, George Carabin, aged 94, passed away February 9, 2019, at the Brookdale assisted living center in Altamonte Springs, Florida . This kind and passionate man was loved and revered at the Guild for his artistic contributions and personal impact on Guild volunteers and audiences. Whether you knew him or not, please join us in the theatre at 2 pm on March 9th to celebrate his life.
George was born in Bucharest, Romania, where he earned a B.A, M.A. and Ph.D. in acting and directing. He performed over 150 roles at the Municipal Theatre of Bucharest and directed over 26 productions. However, life in Communist Romania became very oppressive and difficult for George, his wife, Sylvia and their little daughter, Ioana, who became a political refugee. After years of political pressure from the United States, they were allowed to immigrate and start a new life in the US. George soon found work as professor of drama at Oberlin College in Ohio. The Carabins eventually moved to Vero Beach to be closer to their daughter, who had become a physician in Florida.
George arrived at the Theatre Guild in 2001. By 2014, he had directed eleven plays: Deathtrap, Catch Me If You Can, Rumors, Moon Over Buffalo, Murder Among Friends, Over the River and Through the Woods, The Cemetery Club, All My Sons, The Second Time Around, The Importance of Being Earnest and Harvey. Several of George’s plays won “Show of the Year”. He also conducted acting seminars and directed a special summer production, All the World’s a Stage, where Guild actors performed Shakespeare. For his accomplishments he received the Guild’s “Lifetime Membership Award”.
